The urban port city of Kerala, Kochi is a beautiful blend of the ancient with the cosmopolitan. With daintily tiled Dutch and Portuguese bungalows on one hand and the throbbing city of Ernakulam on the other, Kochi is one of the most popular cities in South India. Inhabited by a conglomeration of people from various sects across the globe, Kochi is a melting pot of culture. Founded in 1341, Kochi is divided into three distinct districts, the modern Ernakulam, the atmospheric Fort Kochi, and Mattancherry. The quaint, cobbled streets of Fort Kochi lead to spice bazaars, ancient mansions and charming Chinese fishing nets. The promenade near the jetty is dotted with eateries and curio shops. There have been controversies about the origin of the name 'Kochi'. Some people attribute the name to the Malayalam word 'Kochazhi' or 'Small Sea', while others think Kochi was named after China when traders from the court of Kublai Khan of China, visited Kochi and gave it the name of their homeland. The local people refer to Kochi as Kochi, and this is the city's official name today.
